Modern medicine has come a long way – it can do wonders for curing certain illnesses that were once deadly. However, there are still many illnesses without cures, and the only thing we can do is ease the pain and suffering.
It’s often best to do this by following a more natural course. Vitamins have some incredible properties that can help your body naturally heal itself and perform properly. You may not have realized that certain vitamins can do so much for your health.
1. Calcium for Osteoporosis
One of the underlying causes of osteoporosis is a long-term calcium deficiency. When people go several years without consuming enough calcium, it can make bones thin and brittle.
Osteoporosis currently has no cure. Additionally, the effects of low calcium intake cannot be reversed. However, taking a calcium supplement can significantly slow the deterioration of bones – meaning less frequent breaks and more flexible movement.
Calcium is not the only vitamin that can help, either. Magnesium, vitamin D, and vitamin K2 can also boost bone health and slow the deterioration of osteoporosis.
2. Vitamin D for Depression
Your body makes vitamin D naturally through your skin. When the skin is exposed to sunlight and UVB rays, it converts an enzyme in your skin into vitamin D, which is essential for bone and brain health. However, when a person receives less sunlight – due to a job, lifestyle, weather, etc. – it can cause depression.
Taking vitamin D can help correct the deficiency that causes a chemical imbalance in the brain. Though supplements may not cure the problem entirely, they can reduce the severity and duration of depressive episodes.
3. Vitamin B Complex for Energy
Low-energy may not be considered a health condition, per se, but it’s still very difficult to deal with on a daily basis. About one in every three Americans suffer from chronic fatigue, either from lack of sleep or another health condition. Fatigue can be associated with other health conditions like diabetes, hypothyroidism, or poor circulation. Luckily, a vitamin B complex can help.
A vitamin B complex refers to supplements that contain all eight of the B vitamins. When combined, these supplements aid in brain function, hormone production, and the conversion of fats, protein, and carbohydrates into energy.
4. Fish Oil for Brain Health
The brain can deal with a lot, from stress and poor memory to depression and ADHD. This is where omega 3 fatty acids come in handy.
Fish oils promote memory and cognitive function, which effectively reduces stress and increases performance. At the same time, the fatty acids are metabolized to form a sort of protection around the brain, shielding you from further deterioration. As a result, fish oil has been used as a way to fight or slow the effects of Alzheimer’s disease.
The omega 3 fatty acids found in fish oil capsules can also help children with ADHD and learning disabilities focus and perform better in school.
5. Vitamin C for Heart Disease Risk
You’ve probably heard that vitamin C is great for immune support, but did you know that it can also decrease a person’s risk for developing heart disease? Vitamin C is one of the most potent antioxidants, which can reduce high blood pressure as well as slow the formation of blood clots. For these reasons, it prevents artery damage and reduces your risk of developing bad cholesterol.
Research from the University of Copenhagen shows that those who get their allotment of vitamin C have a 15 percent lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease and a 20 percent lower likelihood of early death. Since heart disease is the number one cause of death in America, these statistics should be no surprise.
Getting your daily doses of health-boosting vitamins can literally be a lifesaver. That being said, don’t forget the importance of a well-balanced diet from the beginning. Your body absorbs vitamins and nutrients better from food than it does supplements.
However, if you experience a deficiency, or you aren’t consuming enough of a vitamin in your regular diet, supplements can effectively make up the difference and ease a number of health conditions.
