5 Fashion Forward Tips

While there are dozens of different tips and tricks – and fashionistas will attempt to overwhelm you with their long lists of do’s and don’ts – there are really only five rules that matter. If you can focus on these five things, you’ll be better off than most.

Start by grooming. While the caveman look may have worked in college, it’s not becoming in the professional workplace. However, that’s not to say no facial hair is allowed. If you’re going to keep a mustache or beard, it needs to be trimmed close to the skin (no longer than one-quarter of an inch) and should have a definitive line along the underside of the jawbone. It’s also important to keep all facial hair the same length; otherwise you’ll end up with a patchy, unkempt look. As for your hair, it should be above the ears and the eyebrows in the front. In the back, you neckline should be definitive and neat.

Get a suit that fits. Every man needs a suit that actually fits. While it may cost a little extra to get a suit tailored, it’s well worth every dollar you spend. The seam at the top of the shoulder should be the same length as the bone underneath it. The seat of your pants should lie loosely against your buttocks without pulling against you. Trousers should gently touch the top of your shoes, and the jacket should button without straining the two halves.

Pay attention to details. The difference between a well-dressed man and a disheveled person is in the details. Pay attention to your shoes and ensure they’re always polished. Iron out wrinkles and always check for stains before putting anything on. People notice the details and by mastering the small things you’ll be seen as credible and professional.

Spend on accessories. In addition to spending money on a tailored suit, you should also spend freely when it comes to accessories. While women have dozens of opportunities to dazzle and impress, men are given very few. You want to take advantage of these chances by investing in quality accessories, such as a nice watch, classy briefcase, and stylish cufflinks.

Always overdress. Did you know that 20 percent of people believe “slackers” wear casual clothing in the workplace? In order to ensure you don’t end up as part of this statistic, its’ best to always overdress for the occasion. Nothing bad can come from looking too professional.

Putting it All Together

That’s all it takes. By remembering to groom well, buy suits that truly fit, pay attention to the details, spend on accessories, and commit to overdressing, you can make a visual statement of superiority in business meetings and at networking events.
