Is MEGA Worth the Risk?

Written by ali on April 9, 2013

MEGA is the latest cloud-based service from Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom. Dotcom has been in the media lately not only because of the launch of his new service, but also his continuing legal woes surrounding his web sites. MEGA is similar to Megaupload in a lot of ways but offers enhanced encryption that is supposed to protect the site and the user.

This encryption makes it impossible for an outside source to know what is being shared unless they download it. By then, they are in muddy water, because they have possibly downloaded an illegal file themselves but because they did not know about it ahead of time, in the eyes of MEGA, that takes away the liability from the site.

File sharing services like MEGA are used every day by blogs and web sites to share content. Videos, music and even books are shared illegal through these services and that is why MEGA is trying to change how we share. There are ways out there to find copyright and royalty free music, movies and more, we just have to take the time to find them instead of relying on what happens on sites like MEGA.

Not everyone using MEGA is trying to break the law, but file sharing sites can make it easier to do just that. Is MEGA standing on a thin line? Perhaps, but only time will tell if this new strategy will protect it and its users from the law. For now, MEGA is here to stay, and it is up to users to decide if it is worth the risk.
