9rules new member update

Written by Tyme White on May 28, 2008

Just a quick heads up that I will be sending out emails tomorrow to the new members to begin the setup process. I will make an update to this entry once all the emails are sent out. I keep track of who has been processed and who hasn’t so if, at the end, there are sites missing I will send out a second email.

I also responded to all of the “why wasn’t my site accepted” emails I received. If you didn’t receive my response let me know and I’ll resend it. I enjoyed interacting with all of you.

That’s it. Have a great week everyone!

Update May 29, 2008 6:49pm EST: All the emails have been sent out. If you did not receive it let me know (along with your domain name).

Update June 3, 2008 4:32pm EST: I’ve added all the new members that I received a response from. If you haven’t received my email with instructions to get your site set up or responded and haven’t heard from me, let me know.

  1. Devin Says:

    Thanks for the update Tyme.

    This is all so exciting.
    devin

  2. Travis Vocino Says:

@Devin: I would have definitely gone with “Thanks for your Tyme.”

Puns are the flux-capacitor of the internet.

  3. Devin Says:

    @Travis: Nicely played!

  4. Tyme White Says:

LMAO - haha that was a good one Travis. :)

Talk to you guys tomorrow. I’m looking forward to adding your sites to 9rules.

  5. Tiara Says:

    done :D

  6. Volkher Hofmann (deus62) Says:

    WTF?

All of a sudden - ever since 9rules was fragmented into I don’t know how many sites - I find hits in my logs from “Decaflon” (huh?) and various other sites you guys have cooked up/are cooking up.

When I was a member of 9rules, I cannot remember having given permission to you in regard to doing with my comments/posts/whatever as you please, especially not for suddenly throwing it all into celebrity blogs, geek blogs and whatnot.

I have not been contacted by any of you at any time either as to if I would perhaps consent to what you are doing with everything that was posted on the old 9rules. This, I guess, also goes for just about everyone who ever posted on the old 9rules site.

    Not cool guys.

For many I guess it’s a minor point, but for all I know, you guys are going to put up a pet prOn site at some point and throw any of my posts in there that had the word “cat” in them.

Not very gentleman-like at all and not the way I thought you guys worked.

    :(

Now, I love you guys and all, but I respectfully ask you to remove any contributions I ever made and which are now all over the place in your network.

P.S.: You could have at least asked at some point.

  7. Volkher Hofmann (deus62) Says:

I’ll add one more before you guys get up.

When I was a member of the old 9rules I made it quite clear (when there was a rumour that there might be some “sex-related” site in the works) that I would not have any part of it and leave 9rules. That site was just an over-blown rumor and never came to be (probably wasn’t even a thought yet as far as I can recall).

Later I left 9rules for personal reasons.

    And today?

I find my moniker/name on a site with such illuminating clips/notes/whatever such as …

    - The normalization of oral sex
    - WTF is Janet wearing?
    - Opposite sex drives you crazy — the causes
    - Financial Advice From A Call Girl: How Great Sex Can Make You Rich

Now, I’m certainly not prude, but did you guys actually ever think that you might be getting a former member into trouble because you’re shifting content around?

I’m a high school teacher and I’m easy to find.

In short: I want no part of what you are putting together there and elsewhere.

    So, please …

  8. Tyme White Says:

    Volkher:

Do not ever, and I do mean ever, take one of my blog entries off-topic again with your PERSONAL request. Do I make myself extremely clear?

Second, that same type of content was on 9rules when the social topics were on 9rules. This “complaint/request” (which does NOT belong in my 9rules Member Update entry) should have came A LONG time ago. Us shifting the content around wasn’t the issue. Those topics are links to other sites, not content hosted on our site but we’ve had discussion about sex on 9rules. We’ve had members discuss sex on their sites….not like we control their content. It was always there so technically, you could have been in trouble simply because it was on 9rules.

    Which is isn’t anymore.
Which is why this discussion doesn’t belong on 9rules.
In my New Member Update entry.

You’re profile has been deleted. I strongly advise due to your situation you don’t, in the future, recreate it.

And unless you’re saying thank you - don’t take my blog entry off-topic anymore. Any other comments outside of what this entry is about will be deleted.

  9. Volkher Hofmann (deus62) Says:

    Thanks.

  10. Tyme White Says:

My father was a teacher for 30 years and I even understand the need to distance oneself from specific types of topics. Taking a discussion off topic when you know the email address of the people you want to reach with a personal request about a different site is bad etiquette (Rule #2 – pick any etiquette guide…it’s on there). Period. That’s the equivalent of posting a comment to a news entry on News.com to have an account profile deleted on Gamespot.com. Same company owns them but they are two completely different sites. Volkher has our email addresses and knows how to reach us.

Let me clarify these links a bit. They are on a social site where people submit links they like – similar to Digg, Delicious, Reddit, etc. Let’s look at the links Volkher discussed:

Opposite sex drives you crazy — the causes - CNN: talking about differences between men and women, for example women liking to cuddle and men don’t like shopping.

WTF is Janet wearing? - Socialite’s Life: A photo of Janet Jackson wearing MC Hammer pants – a completely PG photo.

The normalization of oral sex - Slate: talking about educating children about oral sex due to the trend of kids thinking it’s not sex.

Financial Advice From A Call Girl: How Great Sex Can Make You Rich - Saving Advice: a discussion on how having sex with your partner has financial and health rewards.

All leading sites in their niche. Nothing that couldn’t be seen on your local news station (I first heard about the trend for youths thinking oral sex wasn’t sex on the local news). The fact that the topics appear on the front page means that they were voted up – the community felt the articles were relevant (and didn’t judge content by a title).

That’s mild compared to what some of our members have written – for example cursing in their titles. Ranting on their blogs with curse words flowing. One of the most popular topics on 9rules (Notes) was F*ck Bush (a note from 2006)…that was on our front page for weeks. As I’m writing this on the front page of Reddit: - Microsoft DRM – because f*ck you is why is “ok” but an article encouraging a parent to have an honest discussion about oral sex because it is proven that more kids are engaging in oral sex is “bad”? Depends on the user’s perception of the topic.

We grouped the same content grouped together to make it easier to subscribe to topics that interest you and it’s easier to distance yourself from topics that one feels inappropriate. On the old 9rules F*ck Bush, a discussion on parenting and oral sex, knitting and the latest news on the iPhone could all appear on the same page. Now, they are distinctly separated. That’s a good thing.

Posting a comment (instead of emailing one of us) doesn’t guarantee it will be taken care of. It doesn’t even guarantee it will be seen. Companies have protocols for these types of things for a reason. Again, taking a entry off-topic for customer support is universally considered bad etiquette particularly when the person has the email address to submit the request.

If there is anyone else with this concern - tyme@9rules.com. You can reach me personally.

Taking this back on topic…I received a couple of responses from new members and I’ll process those shortly. I’ll post an update to the entry once complete.

  11. Volkher Hofmann (deus62) Says:

Let’s see if you give me a chance to defend myself here although you explicity told me not to.

This is how it went down:

    a) I was contacted by a person I work with today with a simple question: Did you know that your posts are published on a site with the following topics (list of topics with oral sex, etc. in them). He then asked if I thought that was a smart idea.

    b) I was totally confused because I hadn’t even heard of the site.

    c) I then went to my various site stats for the past 4 weeks and started hunting.

    d) When I ended up on the site in question (for the first time ever), I realized it was a new 9rules site, I tried the contact form and got one of those cat error pages. And then again.

    e) Believe it or not, I didn’t have your email addresses anymore because we haven’t conversed in ages and I simply didn’t keep them because there wasn’t any need to. So, before wasting an hour searching, I posted on your blog.

    f) I later wrote you an email by simply sending one to the most likely address. No idea if that worked. But right there and then I wanted it to be known to the “Triad” that I did not approve.

Now, I have no idea what the intentions of people are who search out my stuff on the Internet but I was always careful about where I posted and why … and that was never a secret either (also not on 9rules).

If I agree with my colleagues or the parents and their sensibilities is way beyond the issue. We are not backward, prude or whatever, but I have contact daily with people whose senitivities are easily shaken by things that wouldn’t even start to rock my boat. Everything from extremely conservative, to liberal, to religiously fundamental, both of my own nationality and others. Hell, we’ve had a girl killed (!) here recently, by her own family at that (!), because they thought that her talking (!) to a boy of another faith and nationality was inappropriate. It’s a crazy world.

So, a person who wants to find an error in my ways is not going to open all those topics up and analyze them as to their real content, read it all, etc. He/she just points a finger and I’ve got explaining to do, one way or the other. That’s how people work, unfortunately. Because I am aware of this, I don’t post in these contexts and when I posted on 9rules that time, those topics did not turn up next to mine at all, Today they do/did in a much more direct fashion.

To sum it up, I didn’t feel like having to do any explaining now or anytime in the future because of stuff I posted in a very different context that time. And the context was different, no doubt about it in my mind.

  12. Scrivs Says:

@Volkher: You needed some attention in your life or something? You could have definitely done better than this. You should probably just move on and find something new online. Because you are seriously stretching with your reasoning here.

You don’t have our emails?! What?

How hard do you really think it is to figure out one of our emails? Now I know you are trying to throw one over on us and just being your usual dramatic self. Your comments and topics were posted on a site that talked about having sex with your boss (yeah the old 9rules had that) and nothing was brought up. Topics haven’t changed at all.

As for our contact forms not working, I guess the people who use them daily have mystical powers.

“Now, I love you guys and all, but I respectfully ask you to remove any contributions I ever made and which are now all over the place in your network.”

Man you say this every single time you come at us with some drama. It’s like telling your wife how much you love her before you beat her. Please stop loving us. I beg you. Please.

Good luck with the rest of your life and if you have some issues feel free to contact me via email. You have bothered Tyme enough.

  13. Volkher Hofmann (deus62) Says:

    Thanks for your understanding.
I was actually doing exactly what you just suggested until this stuff popped up.
    Cheers!
