Dreamhost Killed Launch Day 1
Written by Scrivs on November 18, 2005
We had four sites lined up today to announce, but at least two of them that I know of have been effected by the outages at Dreamhost. Therefore, this just means that Monday will be even more “action-packed” (is that possible on a blog that just announces stuff?) so hopefully Dreamhost can get their act together by then. If you are looking for an alternative hosting providing we can’t say enough good things about MediaTemple who is our exclusive hosting partner for the 9rules Network.
Emails will continue to go out today and if you are super curious as to who some of the new members are Blog Network Watch has done its Technorati homework and found some.

Bah! They’ve been having lots of problems lately. They were offline for about an hour last night too.
I switched from 1&1 when DreamHost had that huge sale in August. I’m actually paying more now and my site has seen more down time than ever before. Think it’s time to make another switch…

What does their host being down have to do with your being forced to delay the annoucement?
I mean, your competition (or whatever they are) scooped you on your own story, isn’t that worse?
Just announce it and put a disclaimer that the site is currently unavailable.
Just a thought.

One thing about being announced is that you get some new readers and a little boost of traffic. No use if your site is down as you shouldn’t expect people to comeback to that entry and click on the site again. We do this to be fair to our new members.
If I was truly worried about being “scooped” I wouldn’t ask new members to post entries announcing their inclusion into the Network until after we announce them. This doesn’t effect our Network and it doesn’t effect the company’s business model and in fact could serve to produce even more traffic for those members. Nothing wrong with that.
Blog Network Watch did their job and now 9rules is plastered on their homepage. Is that worse? Not in my mind.

Cool.

Matt, you gotta get Media Temple. This is not even a question. Best customer service on the planet, all the right server-side software to run a killer blog, and SERIOUS uptime (I’ve been out for like 5 minutes in a month and a half on two of my sites) make it an awesome choice for hosting.
In fact, LA’s brownouts hardly even affected my uptime…Sweet! And no, I don’t work for them, but I’m quick to defend another company who has been an asset to my business.

I like this sutey.

Don’t want to start some sort of host pissing match, but I need to come out in support of Dreamhost. I’ve been with them for more than five years and have had rock-solid uptime, service and support. Over time, any host will have hiccups that you may or may not notice. In any case, I tend to point people towards Dreamhost, Media Temple or Text Pattern.

TextDrive rather, little brain fart.

My experience with DreamHost is right in line with Dave’s. I’ve hosted 4 sites with them at various times between 1999 and now, and always been very pleased with their level of service, uptime included.
For what it’s worth, my blog has been running just fine for the past couple of hours — so hopefully whatever their hiccup was this morning, it’s over now.

My site’s been totally down for 2 days straight with no reply to my email!
November 18th, 2005 at 4:57 pm
One of my sites is hosted at Dreamhost and I have had no problems from them either. Great support, great uptime…have really been pleased.

I’m at Dreamhost too and I experienced about 1-2 hours of routing problems this afternoon. My site was very slow and sometimes unreacheable. It was the first time since I moved really.
Mediatemple may be better but it’s more than twice as expensive. Their 5GB plan still has only 75GB of bandwidth at $14,95 while DH offers 5GB / 120GB bandwidth at $7.95.
So if the saying ‘you get what you pay for’ holds water I expect Mediatemple to be loads better than Dreamhost
November 18th, 2005 at 5:45 pm
It’s not like this is the first time this ever happens at DH. I have more than 2 years straight with then and I must say I’m most satisfied with the service. But they sort of got on my nerves today with the router issues as I needed to publish some stuff.
Fortunately it only was a matter of a couple of hours. Still, I gotta cut their support team some slack. I stayed with Mediatemple for 2+ years and they never came closer to the response speed of DH, in my experience. Plus, the number of referrals I’ve got so far mean I have basically free hosting through 2007 or so, so… *shrugs*
November 18th, 2005 at 6:25 pm
I might as well post up defending Dreamhost as well. I have three sites with them and I can’t complain. And like beto, their referral program means I’m not going to be paying for hosting for a couple of years

Scrivs, what’s the go with your MediaTemple partnership? Is it just a marketing arrangement or do you actually host 9rules sites with them?

Thanks for the positive comments about our coverage. Technorati is our friend
Glad we could get you some traffic.

November 19th, 2005 at 3:04 am
Well… I know i didn’t make the list. LOL

But it’s all good.
I’ve come across some really good blogs thanks to 9rules.
I really like the “girl” blogs you have here.
Need more of those too though. LOL
Again, good luck to the new submissions and I can’t wait to discover new and great blogs to read.
November 19th, 2005 at 6:05 pm
Well congrats to anyone that got in and I guess if we haven’t received an email that will be it until hopefully a next round…. If nothing else I now have a load of blog watching I can do and new rss fodder.
November 20th, 2005 at 2:36 am
I don’t think I’ve been blogging long enough to make it in this time. I gotta get my act together
November 20th, 2005 at 6:35 am
Personally, I am going to take it if I haven’t got in as a taking stock and looking what I have to do to get in if there are hopefully more rounds. I see it as a positive just standing up to be counted from anyone that submitted. I plan to read, learn and build on my blog until I am in a position where I will be accepted. Everyone has to have a hobby….lol.

I was going to say, maybe it’s about time that there be another network sister to 9rules. I mean, the only reason it hasn’t happened yet is there is nobody cool like Scrivs to do it. But say there was a sister site, 8rules or 9stipulations or something. I mean, how many more sites could 9rules hold? And why did Scrivs make the decision not to stop at 9?
November 20th, 2005 at 12:06 pm
Scrivs,
My web host finially fixed their server problem. Thought I would let you know so you could look at the site again. Didn’t want my site skipped because the server was down.
I should probably switch to a better web host soon.
November 20th, 2005 at 9:37 pm
Anthony: We host the network site on their servers and they offer greatly discounted plans for all 9rules members. So it goes way beyond just an advertising campaign.
November 20th, 2005 at 11:23 pm
Christian: That is a good idea
