Colin Devroe Is About To Retire

Written by Scrivs on September 30, 2005

Yep, you read that right. Colin is 25 today and at that age you have to wonder what else is there to do in life since it’s almost over…right? Even though I am 25 I missed the first 24 years in some sort of non-alcoholic drunken haze so I have to catch up with all of that. Matthew is around 78 so I am surprised he is still alive and Mike just turned 12 I think. Amazing what those lil buggers can do with photoshop huh?

Anyways, happy birthday buddy! Quarter of a century ain’t that bad at all.

Dignity Is Deadly

Written by Scrivs on September 30, 2005

Business guru Kathy Sierra has written an excellent piece on what happens to companies when they move beyond the start-up phase and I must admit that it is something I have been thinking a lot about lately. We are fortunate to be a small team that gets along and are very laid back with regards to how we get things done. What happens to us though once we move passed this small stage? Do we lose the passion and excitement?

I can’t answer that now, but I do know that once it stops being fun working for 9rules I am buying the first ticket out of here. If dignity is deadly then that’s a good thing because I am not sure we had any to start off with in the first place.

Blog Network Revenue Models

Written by Scrivs on September 30, 2005

We passed the saturation point of blog networks a long time ago and yet the discussion of how you pay your writers still seems to loom amongst the small players while the big dogs show which model has proven to be successful. I think asking how you should pay writers in the wrong question and I talk about what the right question is over at Work Boxers.

Gawker and WIN started with money so doing what they did was fairly easy. Everyone else though has to provide something different and with many of these newer startups you aren’t seeing anything different which is a shame because there is still plenty of room for innovation. The Fine Fools Community is part of my experiment in the arena of network owned sites to see if I can put some of my thoughts into actions.

So far I would have to say it’s working.

Business Logs

Written by Mike Rundle on September 28, 2005

I think I’m a bit late to this party since BusinessLogs.com has been a member of 9rules since Day One, but I just realized it was never announced!

Business Logs is the consulting firm run by Paul, Matthew, Colin, and I, and BusinessLogs.com is our homepage and company weblog. We normally talk about reputation management, weblog-based technology, user experience, and some other fun stuff, so feel free to check it out and subscribe to our RSS feed.

B-Logs

I redesigned (most) of the site over the summer and fully planned on coming back and fixing some pages that don’t have the new look, but I got so bogged down with 9rules and client work that I just haven’t gotten to it yet. Old look = sidebar on the right. New look = sidebar on the left, plus a big footer which we implemented before big footers were cool.

So what exactly is Business Logs anyway? Well, we mostly do client work that involves weblogs in some way — either an internal collaboration weblog, or external customer-facing ones, or wikis, etc. Business Logs lets us do work to pay the bills while we bootstrap 9rules into what we know it can become. Without Business Logs there would have been no 9rules, so hopefully those clients keep on-a-comin’!

The Fine Fools Community

I won’t go into any details here since everything you need to know can be found here and on the Fine Fools site. Something interesting. Something fun. Something you might want to checkout.
