9rules Blog Redesign

Written by Mike Rundle on June 17, 2005

Whew, it’s up.

Colin and I have been busting our tails this past week with the 9rules Weblog design, and finally it’s up and poppin’. Some details about the design:

It’s not done yet. I’m a pretty strong perfectionist, so seeing unstyled links floating around the design usually makes my eyes twitch uncontrollably, but for now it’s cool. We’ve got bigger fish to fry, but we’ll definitely be coming back and working all the kinks out this coming week.

The icons are really hot. My illustration/pixel skillz only take me so far, so when that part of my skillset ran out, I turned to Paul Jarvis and his amazing twotiny icon set. I customized some stuff here and there (the blown up magnifying glass search icon, etc.) but basically I stood on his shoulders. And if you use this magical link you get to buy the whole set for only $50 USD. Cheap!

The RSS feed for each post. I’m an MT guy, so RSS feeds per post is a somewhat magical and foreign land to me, but it definitely rocks. Colin usually waves his hands and makes some custom 9rules functionality appear out of thin air, so I’m probably not the guy to ask about the crazy stuff going on behind the scenes. But believe me, it’s crazy. Think of regular RSS feeds as a slice of plain cheesecake. Then think of 9rules RSS feeds as the whole damn pie with 6lbs of strawberries and blueberries on top. Yeah, it’s that good, just wait and see what we’ve got in store.

What do you guys think? Keep in mind that it’s only about 90% right now, so goofy IA issues and unstyled links may be periodically dropping on your heads so be careful.

    *Mike tests comments*

    Hey, they work! Nice! :)

  2. Scrivs Says:

I think it looks like the rest of the site. Can I see your portfolio? All you seem to do are template type designs. Maybe you can get in CSS Drive with this one.

  3. Colin Devroe Says:

*Colin runs to write a script that will forward any traffic from CSS Drive back to its maker!*

  4. paul Says:

    them icons is mighty purty…

  5. Bryan Says:

I think it sucks. I mean, who makes their blog look like their homepage. Maybe if you could hire some decent designers and some less that crappy programmers, you might actually have a decent website

Ah, who am I kidding, the site fockin rocks dude! Great job guy. I am digging the icons right now. Glad to finally see this thing running.

  6. Rob Mientjes Says:

Mike, I told you already about the home page, but it rocks. Nice work.

Paul, you’re really a mean tease. You’d have thought the CSS Drive jokery would have ceased by now…

  7. Mathias Bynens Says:

    Two words, one hyphen: kick-ass.

  8. Shawn Grimes Says:

Great job on the design guys. I really like it alot. All the nice icons and lovely readable text. Nicely done.

  9. Moises Kirsch Says:

Very sweet… I dig the network, the site… man I’m jelous!

  10. Steve Says:

    Looks great guys.

How about making the old template open-source? That would be nice.

  11. Colin Devroe Says:

Thanks for all the kind words thus far. Know we’re still working hard cleaning up the loose ends – but overall we’re really happy with the consensus.

    Again, thanks for the comments.

  12. Jeff Wheeler Says:

Wow. I was expecting something good, but this totally went over that expectation.

    It’s beautiful!

  13. KMB Says:

Just great. Looks easy on the eyes and very clean.

But one thing bothers me, the stuff next to the logo (“What is the network?”…) somehow reminded me of the Google adsense so the first time I saw it, I just skipped it (sort of “Adsense-Blindness”).

  14. TipTap Says:

How do i become part of the 9rules network? im liking the look and feel of your network and i want a piece of the pie

  15. TwoCents Says:

1 thing I really can’t stand on any blogs, but especially this one : the big Trackbacks box which shows up before the comments, even whern there aren’t any Trackbacks — so much wasted space!

  16. taughnee Says:

    Pffftt. It’s fantastic, great job!

  17. Ryan Latham Says:

Maybe you can get in CSS Drive with this one.

    ROFL.

Good job…now Mike style the Next, Previous page links. Straight up serif blue is looking like a nasty. Its like when you go on spring break see all these beautiful women; but there is only one fugly one. So style it or I will have to drink more to make her less fugly.

  18. Shawn Grimes Says:

    Question,

Whats with all the CSS drive sarcasm? I recently had my site listed there and was pretty happy about it. Sure, it’s not theVault or Stylegala by far, but it is still nice for beginners such as myself to have a place to have their work put out there.

  19. Brian Says:

    http://9rules.com/whitespace/css_drive_features_kubrick.php

CSS Drive featured a blog that was using the Kubrick template (the default WordPress one), and ONLY the Kubrick template. The site was nothing special, and was just like every other default WordPress site out there. Read more about at Whitespace (using the link above).

  20. cristina Says:

    where can i join?

  21. John Serris Says:

Wow, this looks great boys! Really love the design.

  22. Dave Says:

Hmm love it. Not quite sure on the rss feeds. Have to wait until it’s finished. A new one per article sounds insane!. But heh ace

  23. Ben Says:

It looks good :) I am digging the design.

  24. Chris J. Davis Says:

Boys you continue to amaze. The look integrates very well with the overview aggregation page, but still has a certain… how you say, “Je ne sais quoi“.

  25. Thiago Says:

Awesome redesign. Could not have done better. The icons are amazing and I also love the colors. Great work.

A bit of topic, but I wanted to know of any of you guys tried the free mac mimi promotions on the web . I am currenly working on a old pc, and would love to get one of those even though I can’t afford it now.

  26. Ethan Cole Says:

Very nice. You’re site is very helpful. from insufficient premises: http://psa-eid.org , Memorizing Pair Play or not which differ from the prejudices , Forecast Percieve Double – that is all that Opponents is capable of their senses slowly

  27. Phentermine Says:

No doubt, it’s one of the most interesting sites I’ve been at. Thanks! :)
