Wikipes

Written by Scrivs on May 12, 2005

Although the majority of the sites within the network easily fall under the category of “blogs” we never consider ourselves to be a blog network. Instead we refer to ourselves as a content network and this site exemplifies why we have made that decision. Wikipes is a wiki for recipes and it is also a wiki done right.

Most wikis use the default templates of the wiki package and are poorly managed. Wikipes is neither of these. A well-managed site that caters to all sorts of recipes and cultures, wikipes is your one-stop shop for cooking.

If you like cooking or are at least interested in giving it a shot make sure to spend the rest of your life going through the recipes that wikipe offers.

Well that’s not cool…seems as though the site has been defaced.

  2. Nicole Says:

    Wow, defaced indeed.

  3. Bryan Says:

    Whoa!

Well, the screenshot looks cool :)

  4. Brian B Says:

why do people do that? I mean its a recipe site…

  5. Colin Devroe Says:

Here lies the conversation of a script kiddy: “Dude, today I hacked into a recipe website and changed the home page. Yeah, I know, I’m really cool. Hey Mom! Can I stay up past 10?”

  6. kartooner Says:

It’s been fixed. However, after Matt and I talked about it, we plugged “site defaced by fd” into Google and found this: http://www.femurs.net

A support ticket has been sent to Dreamhost about this, so hopefully — if all goes well — they’ll get to the bottom of this.

All that aside, it’s great to see the site as a part of the Network! :)

  7. kartooner Says:

Oh, sorry, wrong link. Try this link instead.

  8. Scrivs Says:

Glad to see you got everything back up fairly quickly.

  9. Matt Burris Says:

Yea, whoever did it, didn’t do much damage. Just changed the index.php and .htaccess files. I backup fairly frequently, and just restored those two files.

I really have no enemies online, so the only thing I can think of is that it was just some random script kiddy going on random defacing sprees, or it was the guy I banned last night for posting a recipe for Goat Head Soup with names that are made up. So I added his IP to the deny from in the .htaccess. If it was him, he didn’t delete his IP entry in the renamed .htaccess nor delete it, so I doubt it was him.

Hope this didn’t hurt first impressions with the site on launch day with the network. :(

  10. Bryan Says:

Hey Matt, glad to have you in the network and I am glad you got your site back up.

    Good job.

Do you have any clue how he broke in?

  11. Matt Burris Says:

I wish I knew. I use a password that isn’t easy to guess, and not really a word. I’m thinking, like the defacing image said, that it’s something server-side that is beyond my control. I’m hoping maybe Dreamhost will let me know if it was something with the software I’m using, or something on their end.

If it is the software I’m using, I may either have to upgrade to the latest version (which is an arduous task considering all the manual changes I’ve made) or consider going with a different wiki software.

Whatever the case may be, no script kiddy will ever get me down. :)

  12. Matt Burris Says:

Well I figured out what it was. I have an upload script I enabled to allow people to upload pictures of food to go alongside their recipe.

Someone uploaded a PHP script file disguised as an image (google1.gif.php) which has code in it to give the person just enough permission to rename files and upload a file, which is how the defacing took place. That explains why not much damage took place.

If you’d like to see the script, it can be downloaded at http://wikipes.com/files/google1.gif.bak

I’ll be in contact with the developer of the software I am using, and our host about this situation. Got to love those script kiddies … or not.
